Two below middle C

I always thought of
Castrati as perfect instruments
manufactured by choir masters
or convenient farm accidents.
I imagined that they
ruled Europe singing
like fat angels but
inside were indolent
little demons raging
against a world which had
never allowed them sin.

But some of them probably
never made it really
and washed up heavy and pale
talking endlessly
about how they had once
opened for Farinelli
in Vienna, 1731.

but Christ, what a great
show that was.
